“My interest in clouds and atmospheric phenomena is not one so much of learning about them as natural phenomena, but rather an interest in their symbolic nature and representation. The cloud is an ephemeral form, without boundaries, and in constant change; interesting properties that in the context of history of art find affinity with Futurist theories and certain concepts of the light and space artists of the 60/70′s on the nature of space and form. In the digital world, the cloud has become the prime symbol of information, while in psychology it symbolizes our consciousness. The cloud as a symbol then gives a conceptual dimension to an otherwise abstract space; that of wires and data channels, neurons and pathways. The relationships between information and consciousness, chaos and order, motion and stasis, and between form and space, are the subjects of ‘Perceptual Consciousness’

In “Gravity,” Spriggs invites the viewer to engage with the installation as an experience, rather than simply as a collection of individual images. The viewer’s perception is shaped by the way the layers of painted transparencies interact and overlap with one another, creating a sense of depth and form and movement. We perceive all the images of ‘Gravity’ simultaneously as a form, but one without boundaries.
The work of phenomenologists such as Maurice Merleau-Ponty, highlight the importance of understanding the lived experience of the world and the ways in which the body shapes perceptions. In “Gravity,” Spriggs creates an embodied experience, which encourages a deeper understanding of the subject matter, how perception creates itself, and how the mind organizes stimuli into a meaningful whole. #davidspriggs #contemporaryart

Suspended in a cross formation are four illuminate

Suspended in a cross formation are four illuminated plexi vessels, each containing a nebulous cube of one of the four subtractive primaries used in the CMYK process. The hazy cubical forms reference visual culture constructions such as the screen and the hologram, while simultaneously dialoguing with monochromatic painting of the 20th Century. Spriggs has built an artistic practice characterized by a desire to transcend the limitations of “flat” media in re-creating three-dimensional space. The particular social, political, and technological connotations attached to individual colours, and by extension, the tradition of the monochrome loom large in Spriggs’ chroma-centric practice. The artist, however, prefers to describe his works as “stratachromes.” This formal designation captures the layered process that gives literal dimension to Spriggs’ hovering, soft-edge, monochromatic “Spatial Image Sculptures.”
4 Colour Separation is the latest instalment in a collection of works that exhibit a longstanding engagement with the mechanics of perception. While the exploration of optics is a persistent feature of Spriggs’ practice, one must not overlook the haptic and corporeal dimensions of the artist’s work. Much like its large scale and immersive predecessor, Stratachrome, 4 Colour Separation creates a ground to be navigated. The substantial dimensional presence of these Spatial Image Sculptures implicates our bodies in the viewing experience and speaks to the dynamic nature of perception itself. The constantly shifting play of light and chromatic intensity as one moves around the work imbues these stratachromes with tremendous vitality and a special power to split a single ubiquitous printing process into multiple poignant embodied experiences.

‘First Wave’ by David Spriggs @david_spriggs is a Stratachrome artwork that was created during the COVID-19 pandemic and exhibited at the Oku-Noto Triennale in Suzu, Japan. Intense red colour flows through the space of a former fishing net warehouse in Suzu, the artwork is not projected light but a three-dimensional painting of painted layered transparencies. It is a stratachromatic representation of the beauty and power of nature using aesthetics to create an emotional response in the viewer. The artwork is made up of 90 transparent sheets painted with red paint, layered to create the appearance of a massive, incoming tsunami wave. The intense saturation of the red color, as well as its association with blood, adds to the emotional impact of the piece. The title of the artwork, ‘First Wave’, references both the current pandemic and to Japanese art history, specifically the famous Hokusai print, ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’

My first Stratachrome installation was an important step in my exploration of colour and perception. The installation featured chroma-key green pigment layered through sheets of transparency, creating three-dimensional forms suspended within a carefully illuminated environment. As viewers moved around the space, green appeared to shift, deepen, and transform, emphasizing colour not as a static pigment, but as an active, spatial presence. This immersive experience challenged viewers to see colour as an entity that could shift and respond to their movement and perspective. This work set the foundation for my ongoing Stratachrome series, using my layered transparency technique to explore the symbolic, cultural, and perceptual dimensions of colour. ‘Holocene’ by @david_spriggs.
Spriggs revels in illusion while retaining a critical engagement with it. Holocene continues a long time interest in the generation—and subsequent deconstruction—of perceptual phenomena, this time directing his efforts towards an adaptation of linear perspective. The technique Spriggs uses—he calls it “strata-linear perspective”—expands classical, two-dimensional, linear perspective by spreading it across parallel planes to create physical as well as visual depth. The acrylic shapes on the layered mylar all point inward towards a single vanishing point. The depth is amplified by the illusion of volume created by his layered sheets, and the mise-en-abyme effect created by the reflection of the mylar, which expands one point linear perspective towards a true vanishing point: beyond the limits of sight.

I am excited to announce that my artwork *Origins* is featured in the exhibition *Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses* at THE GALLERY OF MODERN ART in Australia, running from June 29 to October 7, 2024. Previously exhibited at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in the Louvre complex in Paris. Positioned in the opening room, *Origins* connects with the exhibition’s exploration of water and the origins of life, presented in dialogue with Iris van Herpen’s latest collection, *Carte Blanche*. This juxtaposition highlights the deep connections between art, fashion, and nature, evoking a reflection on the elemental forces that shape our world. My piece—created with layered transparencies—mirrors Herpen’s innovative use of form and movement, emphasizing the dynamic, flowing origins of life and the universe. *Origins* invites viewers into an immersive, atmospheric experience that echoes the themes of creation, transformation, and fluidity.

Curated by Cloé Pitiot and Louise Curtis from the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, alongside QAGOMA curators Nina Miall and Jacinta Giles, this exhibition is a remarkable convergence of fashion, art, design, and science. From Herpen’s visionary haute couture garments to contemporary artworks that draw on natural history and technology, the exhibition offers a sensory dialogue between disciplines.
