In Utero considers form as something in the process of becoming. The foetal subject gives this enquiry a direct expression: a body taking shape, its boundaries still emerging. Suspended within transparent space, it appears both present and not yet fully formed.
As the viewer moves, its contours gather into volume, then separate into marks across the layers. This changing encounter connects the subject’s development with the way form comes into view. Made in 2001, In Utero is an early exploration of Spriggs’ continuing interest in how a subject occupies space without becoming a solid mass.
