Spiralling particles gather into a whole whose form suggests continuous movement.
Holos takes its title from the Greek word meaning whole or entire. Its spherical formation brings many separate particles into an apparently shared motion, allowing individuality and collective order to remain visible together. The work references the swirlonic state of active matter described in a 2020 scientific study, in which groups of active particles orbit a common centre. This reference gives the sphere a particular significance: its wholeness suggests an organisation sustained through movement. The painted particles remain still, yet their curving paths allow the eye to follow an implied circulation. Changes in viewpoint open the formation into separate marks before it gathers again as a luminous body. Holos is permanently installed at the entrance to the Conrad Lobby at Resorts World Las Vegas.
