An image of life before birth is held between intimacy and distance.

In Utero II returns to a subject Spriggs first explored in 2001. A prenatal figure appears suspended within a luminous enclosure, its curled body softly emerging from the surrounding space. The image brings an ordinarily unseen stage of life into view, inviting recognition of a beginning that none of us can remember. Its intimacy is accompanied by distance. The figure is close enough to examine, yet remains enclosed and inaccessible. Its softened appearance recalls prenatal imaging, through which a body is encountered visually before it can be met in person. The work holds this anticipation in suspension. It offers no narrative of what follows, concentrating attention on a life in formation and the vulnerability of that state. The transparent enclosure gives the encounter a further ambiguity: it suggests protection while making the figure available to the gaze. Within this space, emergence becomes both the subject of the image and the experience of looking at it.
