A dark centre gathers a radiating white field into an image of vision that seems to look back.
The Vision Series distils the perceptual intensity of Spriggs’ monumental Vision installations into an intimate scale. Each work centres on an aperture ringed by dispersing marks. The form can read as an iris, an implosion, an explosion, or an image emerging from blindness.
The work does not simply represent an eye. It stages the conditions of seeing. From the principal viewpoint, the marks coalesce into a coherent image; from an oblique angle, that image separates into planes and the apparent volume becomes visibly contingent.
The reciprocal gaze
To see is also to enter a relation with what is seen. The dark centre functions as both void and pupil, drawing vision into the work while giving it an uncanny sense of returning the gaze.
As the viewer moves, the apparent eye becomes unstable. Its form is repeatedly made and unmade, placing perception between recognition and uncertainty, presence and absence.
The Vision Series comprises individual works developed from Spriggs’ monumental Vision installations.
