An open centre draws the gaze into a form that seems to look back.
The Vision Series brings the eye like formations of Spriggs’ monumental Vision installations to a smaller scale. Radiating marks surround an aperture, suggesting both an iris and an event of expansion or collapse. The resemblance to an eye gives the encounter an uncanny reciprocity. Looking into the work can feel like facing a gaze, although the centre remains empty. That absence is essential to the apparent presence of the form: it is the opening around which the surrounding marks acquire direction and force. As the viewer moves, the relationship between the opening and its surrounding field changes. Each sculpture holds the act of seeing close to its subject, making vision something encountered as well as exercised.
