A layered perspective of negative space
In Strata-Perspective, the space removed from the material becomes the sculpture. Differently shaped openings pass through a sequence of separated transparent sheets. As the surrounding film accumulates into a cloudy density, the cut areas remain clear, revealing a volume defined by absence. The form is made entirely through these openings; no paint or ink gives it substance.
Linear perspective draws the eye into an imagined depth through the convergence of lines on a flat surface. Here, its geometry extends across physical intervals. The sequence of cut edges suggests walls, passages and recesses, giving empty space an almost architectural organisation.
Related to Holocene, made in the same year, the work brings perspective into the space of sculpture. As the viewer moves, alignments shift and the recess opens into separate edges and intervals. Its architecture belongs to a way of looking as much as to a physical structure. Negative space acquires a defined shape through the material that surrounds it.
