Black &
White Matter
Spatial art · 2019
Black and white give atmosphere a sense of weight.
Black & White Matter brings two cloudlike formations into relation. White gathers as a luminous atmosphere, appearing to float towards the top of its enclosure, while black concentrates below with a sense of weight. The opposing formations echo one another almost like a mirror reflection, giving colour a sense of upward movement and downward pull.
The formations appear suspended at a moment of emergence or dispersal. Their contours shift as the viewer moves around them. What seems to cohere from one position separates through another, making the encounter unfold between a sense of bodily presence and the transparency that sustains it.
Placed together, the two sculptures make contrast a spatial experience. Each gives the other a more distinct presence, while their shared transparency keeps both forms open to change.
