A sculpture of flight.
In Aero, Spriggs chose to represent flight through atmospheric aerodynamics rather than through the aircraft itself. The work draws on the paired vortices that can become visible as an aircraft passes through cloud, where its wake pulls the cloud into spiralling currents. These atmospheric forms give flight an abstract presence, registering the aircraft’s passage in the movement of the air.
Two white spiralling forms mirror one another, their sweeping contours coming together in an almost heartlike shape. Each retains its own centre of rotation, while their relationship gives rise to a shared whole. This meeting of distinct elements connects Aero to Spriggs’s wider exploration of movement and form in becoming.
Commissioned for Flexjet’s private terminal at Farnborough Airport, Aero stands at the heart of the building, welcoming visitors as they enter the terminal.
