Entropy

Within its modest dimensions, Entropy suggests a form of immense scale. Its luminous spiral evokes a galaxy, carrying an impression of rotation and accumulated energy. This implied movement allows the subject to be imagined far beyond the limits of its enclosure.

The title draws on entropy’s association with the dispersal of energy and the passage from order towards disorder. The form appears suspended within this process: its circular structure holds together as its edges become diffuse. The distribution of marks through space gives the still form a sense of ongoing transformation.

Made in 2007, Entropy was an early exploration of rotational movement and the forces a form can suggest. These concerns later developed at an architectural scale in Axis of Power (2009), where the vortex became an encounter with the viewer’s whole body.
