Concentric fields expand, intersect, and cancel one another, holding the image between transmission and interference.
In Frequencies, black and white operate as active signals rather than neutral opposites. Rings spread across transparent planes, producing a field that appears simultaneously ordered and unstable. As the viewpoint shifts, the circles align, separate, and pass through one another. What first reads as graphic certainty becomes a spatial event.
The work belongs to Spriggs’ black and white series, which considers how visual oppositions can carry cultural and political force. Here, contrast is neither fixed nor absolute. It is continually reorganised by position, distance, and light.
Signal and interference
The title invokes systems of transmission, vibration, and reception. No single frequency dominates. Repeated rings form provisional alignments in which black defines white, white interrupts black, and the distinction between figure and ground remains in motion.
The viewer does not encounter a stable diagram. The image changes through embodied movement, making perception itself the medium through which order emerges and dissolves.
Frequencies was commissioned by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City and first presented at Noor Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2022.
