Overlapping rings give black and white the rhythm of a shared field.
In Frequencies, repeated circles suggest ripples, pulses and intersecting signals. Black and white move through the same visual space, each making the rhythm of the other more apparent. Their overlap produces an intricate image that resists being divided into two independent parts. The title invites a reading through transmission and reception. These are visual associations: the sculpture gives rhythm a spatial presence, allowing the eye to follow several sequences at once. Order becomes something discovered within their interference rather than imposed by a single dominant pattern. Within Spriggs’ black and white series, Frequencies offers a particular account of duality. Opposites become interwoven, and the distinction between figure and ground changes as attention moves through the image. The work turns contrast into a relation, suggesting how apparently separate positions can occupy and shape a common space. Frequencies was commissioned by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City and first presented at Noor Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2022.
