Perpetual Motion

A still vortex gives the eye a movement with no apparent beginning or end.

In Perpetual Motion, white currents circle a central void. Their recurring curves suggest a movement that could continue indefinitely, carrying the eye around the form and back towards where it began. The title brings the desire for endless motion into a sculpture that is physically still. Duration is sustained through looking: attention follows the implied circulation, returns, and begins again. The open centre gives this movement an axis while leaving its source to the imagination. Changing viewpoints alter the apparent continuity of the vortex, extending the work’s reflection on motion into the time of the encounter.
