Red Wave holds a turbulent form within an illuminated volume. Its rising crest appears immediate and bodily, yet its apparent mass is dispersed across transparent planes.
The monochrome image removes the wave from naturalistic description. Red gives the form a psychological and symbolic charge, bringing associations of blood, danger, heat, urgency, and intensity into the image of moving water.
The wave remains suspended before impact. Its instability is made spatial: from the front, the marks cohere into a concentrated event; from the side, the image opens into a sequence of separate planes.
Red as pressure
Red does not describe the colour of water. It acts as a field of pressure, saturating the wave and the space around it. Light passes through the pigment, allowing the colour to accumulate at the centre and disperse towards the edges.
The image therefore carries two contrary sensations. It appears dense enough to exert force, while remaining visibly unsupported and permeable.
The threshold of impact
A wave is a transfer of energy rather than a fixed body. Red Wave gives that transfer an image without stabilising it as an object. Its form is held at the point where anticipation becomes event.
Movement around the work alters this temporal reading. The crest forms, stretches, and dissolves as the viewer changes position, making perception part of the work’s duration.
Image and structure
The image is distributed across painted plexiglass planes within an illuminated display case. No single plane contains the wave. Its apparent volume is produced through the alignment of partial marks and completed through the changing position of the viewer.
