Vision II

Vision II holds form and emptiness in tension. Its radiating white marks suggest an event unfolding at an immense scale, yet its direction remains uncertain. The viewer may sense a formation coming into being or breaking apart, an outward expansion or an inward collapse. This ambiguity places creation and destruction within the same image. The installation gives the impression of witnessing something beyond the scale of ordinary experience. Its central opening draws the gaze inward while the surrounding trajectories lead it outwards. The image can recall an eye, bringing the act of seeing into relation with what is seen. As the viewer moves, the apparent formation changes. At the sides, the image separates into the edges of its individual planes, reopening the question of where its wholeness resides. Vision II makes this question bodily: an event that appears coherent from one position becomes elusive from another. It was presented in David Spriggs: Material Light at Messums Wiltshire, England, from 9 December 2017 to 4 February 2018.
