Ideologies

Ideologies brings two white formations towards one another within a circular art installation. Their apparent momentum is held in equilibrium: each seems to exert pressure against the other, while the encounter remains unresolved. The title gives this physical opposition a political and psychological dimension. Positions can define themselves through resistance to one another, gathering force without reaching agreement. Here, that tension is given spatial presence through forms poised at the threshold of impact. The curved structure places the viewer within the field of confrontation. Looking from the centre and moving around the outside produce different relationships to the same opposing forms. The work joins the implied movement of its subject to the movement of the body, making an abstract conflict something encountered at human scale. Ideologies was presented at Chalet du Mont Royal, Montréal, for Chromatic in 2014, with support from the Jeunes Mécènes Award for Art, the Conseil des arts de Montréal and Massivart.
